What on Earth is the Eurovision Song Contest?

With the annual Eurovision Song contest quickly approaching I’d thought I’d give you a brieff history lesson about the most prestigious song contest in Europe.

But Victoria some of your follwers are not from Europe could you please explain what the heck it is.

Gladly!!!!!I I am more than happy to eplain it to you my non-Eurpean followers. ^_^

The Eurovision Song Contest or the

Concours Eurovision de la chanson (which was the original name in French) ofthen shortened as ESC or simply Eurovision  is the longest running annual TV song competition. It is held

primarily in the countires of the European Brodcasting Union.

Each participating country submits an original song to be performed on live television and radio and then casts votes for the other countries’ songs to determine the most popular song in the competition. The contest has been broadcast every year for sixty years, since its inauguration in 1956, and is one of the longest-running television programmes in the world. It is also one of the most watched non-sporting events in the world, with audience figures having been quoted in recent years as anything between 100 million and 600 million internationally.Eurovision has also been broadcast outside Europe to several countries that do not compete, such as the USA and China. An exception was made in 2015, when Australia was allowed to compete as a guest entrant as part of the celebration of the 60th anniversary of the event. In November 2015, the EBU announced that Australia would return in 2016. Since 2000, the contest has also been broadcast over the Internet, via the Eurovision website. Winning the Eurovision Song Contest provides a short-term boost to the winning artists’ career, but rarely results in long-term success. Notable exceptions are ABBA (winner in 1974 for Sweden) and Céline Dion (winner in 1988 for Switzerland), both of whom launched successful worldwide careers after their wins.Ireland holds the record for the highest number of wins, having won the contest seven times—including four times in five years in 1992, 1993, 1994 and 1996. The latest winner of the Eurovision Song Contest is Måns Zelmerlöw of Sweden, who won the 2015 contest in Vienna, Austria, with the song “Heroes”. The highest scoring winner is Alexander Rybak who won the 2009 contest with a record-breaking 387 points.(Source: Wikipedia) The winning country gets this trophy….

But not only that the winning country also gets to host Eurovision in their country the next year.

Some notable winners are…

Winner of Eurovision 2015: Sweden: Måns Zelmerlow with the song Heroes

(This means that the ESC will be hosted in Stockholm Sweden this year)

Winner of Eurovision 2009: Alexander Rybak with the song Fairytale

Winner of Eurovision 2006: Lordi with the song Hard Rock Hallelujah

I hope this was a good enough explanation of the ESC but if you do have more questions feel free to go over to my ask blog at www.askvictoriaanything.tumblr.com

I’ll be maore than glad to answer your burning questions.

Have a good day and keep singing!
