just learned that shortly after the Cold War ended Sweden still reported hearing the sound of Russian submarines pinging in nearby waters even after Russia said they had sent no submarines so Sweden had marine specialists listen to the sound and they basically said “yeah, that’s not a submarine, that’s panicked herring farts”

up until that very point in time, Sweden had conflated the sound of huge schools of farting herrings (scared by submarines or predators) with the submarines themselves… the submarines had pretty much nothing to do with the sound they were hearing… all herring farts
